The Hanged Man tarot card

The Card

A man hangs upside down from a living tree, his foot bound, his arms behind his back. His face is serene — even haloed. He has chosen this. In surrender to the unusual vantage point, he sees what others cannot.

Symbolism

The living tree suggests growth, not death. The halo around his head marks the suspension as enlightenment, not punishment. His crossed legs form a cross (worldly concerns); his arms behind his back form a triangle (higher knowledge).

Upright

Voluntary suspension. The Hanged Man has chosen to hang from the tree — notice he doesn't look distressed. He is sacrificing one perspective to gain another. Whatever you are waiting for may require you to stop struggling first.

Reversed

Stalling, useless sacrifice, resistance to the necessary pause. Suspended between choices without the courage to commit to either.
