Temperance tarot card

The Card

A great angel stands with one foot on water and one on land, wings spread, transferring liquid between two cups. The triangle within a square on their robe marks the integration of the physical and spiritual. The path in the background leads to a crown bathed in light.

Symbolism

The two cups and the water between them represent the flow between opposites — not either/or but both/and. One foot on water (unconscious) and one on land (conscious) means full presence in both realms. The iris flowers are named for the goddess of the rainbow — connection between heaven and earth.

Upright

Flow and balance. Temperance shows an angel pouring water between two cups — the water does not spill because they have mastered the flow. Middle path, moderation, and the patience to let things develop at their natural pace.

Reversed

Imbalance, excess, misalignment. Rushing something that requires patience. Extremes replacing harmony.
