Eight of Cups tarot card

The Card

A figure in a red cloak walks away under a solar eclipse. Behind them, eight golden cups are arranged in two neat rows with a gap — the ninth cup of completion is missing. The mountains ahead are steep and unknown. The decision to leave has already been made.

Symbolism

The eclipse of moon and sun represents the dark between two phases — illumination temporarily withdrawn. The eight stacked cups show what is being left: real, organized, achieved things. The gap in the arrangement marks the incompleteness that makes departure inevitable.

Upright

Walking away from something that once mattered. Eight cups are neatly stacked — not broken, not empty — but the figure turns from them anyway, staff in hand, climbing toward the mountains. This is the courage to leave what is comfortable but no longer meaningful.

Reversed

Fear of moving on, returning to what you know is wrong, avoidance of necessary change.
